Do I Need Planning Permission?
This all depends on what work you have had done previous. Some minor house extensions or house alterations can be done wihout any need for planning permissions. This is commonly known as "Permitted Development"
If you have had your house extended in the past, chances are you will need planning permission just to erect a small conservatory.
If you have have not had any previous extension then you could still need planning permission. Here is some examples:
- You want a Dormer window fitted where it is in view of the road.
- Two storey house extension.
- Extension to the side or the front of the house where it is in view of the road.
Needing planning permission to extend or alter your house also depends on the position and size of the project you want to do. You will need to know the averal volume of the extension (or the existing extension). Please use this volume calculation tool to help you.

Most alterations to business premises do need planning permission, including:
- All shop and office extensions;
- Alterations to shop fronts;
- External security shutters or grilles.
You may need planing permission for the change of use. For example;
- To change a house to a shop.
- House to flats.
Satellite dishes sometimes are hard to position to get a good signal. The satellite locator will advise you if you need permission and give you an idea whether it would be granted permission in certain locations.
